Why Colorado Pipes Freeze and Burst in a Thornton Winter

Water expands, pipe does not

A pipe rarely bursts from the cold alone. Water freezes, expands, and the pressure builds between the ice and a closed faucet until the weakest joint gives. That is why a line can split and you do not see the flood until it thaws.

Where it happens in a Thornton home

The pipes at risk run through the cold spots: the garage, the crawlspace, an exterior wall, or an unheated basement corner. Those are the runs to watch when the temperature drops below freezing overnight.

What to do before and during a freeze

On the coldest nights, let a faucet trickle and open the cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls so warm air reaches the pipe. Know where your main shutoff is. If a pipe does burst, shut off the water and call (720) 740-0909. We run seven days a week.
