What hard water does
Hard water carries dissolved minerals that leave scale behind. You see it as white buildup on faucets and shower glass, and you do not see it building up inside the water heater and the pipes, where it shortens the life of both.

A water softener cuts the mineral load before it reaches your fixtures, and flushing the water heater on a regular schedule clears the sediment that collects at the bottom of the tank.
